Quartetto Fantastico!
Chris has two groups of his own... I know! He is a busy guy!
One of his groups, Quartetto Fantastico, is a string quartet featuring Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Peter Jacobson, and Paul Cartwright. They perform select movements from some of your favorite pieces (including the 2nd movement of Ravel string quartet made recently popular by it's prominent use in the film "The Royal Tenenbaums"), as well as some improvisations and other surprises.
What I love most about this group is not only their skill and dedication to the classical culture, but also their approach to improv. Most of the time I can't tell if they just made up a great tune or have been practicing these pieces obsessively.
Regardless on what goes on behind the scenes of Quartetto Fantastico, the shows are absolutely amazing.
If you have not Googled these names... please do!
You will be pleasantly surprised with all the hard work that has come out through these 4 fantastico amigos!
The Hutchins Consort
Chris enjoys working with groups/bands that are known for having interesting instruments and sounds.
Take The Hutchins Consort for example. They are an eight-person ensemble having different-sized violins ranging from the tiny treble violin, tuned one octave above the standard violin, to the gigantic large bass violin, tuned one octave lower than a 'cello. With instruments like these the Hutchins Consort is able to produces an astonishing palette of sounds.
In this ensemble Chris Woods plays the tiny treble violin, and is one of a handful of musicians who has mastered the instrument. With this group Chris explores a large range of musical styles, from Renaissance to Jazz to Classical to Indian!
